Abstract

|
Olanzapine (Zyprexa^(®)) is the new generation of neuroleptic drug which is structurally similar to clozapine. Manufacturer recommends that olanzapine should be stored at room temperature away from light and moisture because it is unstable. However we are preparing the powder and the 1/2 tablet of olanzapine and prescribing for the patients incapable of taking a tablet. So we studied the stability of the powder and the 1/2 tablet of olanzapine to evaluate the pertinence of preparing the powder of olanzapine and to establish the term of validity of the powder of olanzapine. We checked the contents of olanzapine in PTP, 1/2 tablet package, powder package for 28 days by HPLC assay. As a result of these studies, the contents of olanzapine had been maintained with 92~103% in all packages for 28 days regardless of light and the form of preparing. In conclusion, the powder and the 1/2 tablet of olanzapine was stable for 28 days and preparing the powder of olanzapine was pertinent. So we can prescribe the powder of olanzapine for inpatients but also for outpatients until 28 days.
